What Happens Next?

Alastair would like to show you his new (to him) book - we bought it at a used book shop a few weeks ago after a yummy lunch at Friendly's where Alastair had his first french fry. What a day!

The book is from 1959 and is called "What Happens Next? Adventures of a Hero" by Beatrice Schenk de Regniers and is illustrated by REMO (I need to look up this REMO - just one name and all in caps? He must be interesting.) The author's note in the beginning of the book says this:

Peter and Michael's mother said, "My boys like a story that keeps them guessing about what happens next. They like adventure." So I wrote this story for Peter and for Michael and for every boy and girl who likes adventure, who likes a story that keeps them guessing about WHAT HAPPENS NEXT.

The story follows Michael as he leaves home to do great things and have adventures. The adventures involve a baby and mama bear, flying a huge eagle, diving into a mountain lake, the circus, lassoing a bengal tiger and a ham sandwich. Every few pages, when Michael is in a sticky situation, the reader is asked, "What Happens Next?" I bet it will be fun when Alastair is older to see what he thinks will happen to Michael in the following pages.

REMO's illustrations are fun, too. They're just simple line drawings on bright blocks of color. I think Michael looks like a little Pablo Picasso in his striped shirt and overalls (though when I tried to find an image of Picasso in such an outfit, I could not. Perhaps this is just in my head.)

Sorry some of the photos are blurry - Alastair was very excited and could not keep the book still. He just wanted to EAT IT.

Looks like a great book! Now I wonder, What Happens Next? I guess I'll have to get a copy and find out.
